She has a readership of 40 million in China as an education blogger. She is a Tiara Model and was recently awarded 100 Most Beautiful and Influential People in the Industry.

Height: 5 foot – 6 inches
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

How do you feel being showcased as Tiara Magazine’s Model of the Week? This is a special honor. I have seen many of the beautiful and talented models that are featured in Tiara Magazine and to be included with them is very meaningful to me. I will always remember it.

Are you a runway model or print model? Which do you prefer? My modeling is mostly print however I have done several runway shows. I am now doing trade show modeling as well. Each of these types of modeling is different. I enjoy the runway modeling because of the crowds, the action and music. It is very exciting. The down side is that it takes so many hours of preparation prior to the show and then the modeling is over very quickly. Trade shows allow me to interact with people one-on-one. I can present my personality to people as well as my beauty and talent. It is all live and it can be one or two days of work. It is hard work, but the fun lasts a long time. As for print modeling, most of that is done in a closed studio. The public only sees the finished photos but the photos last forever. Location shots are exciting but more difficult. Also I have to ignore the crowds during the shoot until there is time to take photos with some of the spectators. I actually enjoy working with the crowds. I can see that people enjoy my being there.

What do you like about modeling? The attention is great, but I don’t want to sound as if I just do it so people look at me. Models are important in our lives as they are responsible to represent products and attract attention to products. Being a model keeps me aware that I must remain healthy, in good physical shape, and also I must have the correct attitude to be in the public’s eye every day.

What do you say to all the haters out there? Do you let them rain on your parade? You would be shocked at some of the remarks that I get said to me or posted as remarks on my journalistic stories that I write. Generally we all know that people that take time out of their lives to criticize successful people, will in fact never have the time to become successful themselves. Unfortunately they will never understand that they should be chasing their own dreams instead of trying to “rain on my parade”. Because really, I carry an umbrella so I just don’t get rained on.

How can you help others become a model like you? What advice would you give? Here is something very important – just because your friends say “oh you are so pretty you should be a model” is not enough to believe you are a model. Models work hard and they work all hours. To start with you must learn how to do your hair, make-up, and learn the poses. Not just the body, but the head, eyes, mouth, hands, the whole package. I taught myself, but this took several year of study – every day in front of a mirror. Models make it look easy, but it is a lot of work and it is a lot more than just a figure or pretty face. Go to modeling school is the best advice.

What has this industry taught you? When I was a teenager I thought that this was all fun and a lot of attention. Now I know that most of what models do is not seen by anyone. And it is a lot of work, sitting and waiting, standing and waiting in all types of weather or under hot lights with no lunch and sore feet. But this is my job and this is what I do well. I’m looking at the final product, not the painful process.

What modeling experience do you have with Tiara Magazine? I was involved with one of the recent fashion shows for the “Live Out Loud Charity” as well as being selected as one of the 100 most beautiful and influential in the American fashion industry. Prior to that, I featured Sherrie Gearheart in one of my international stories about famous Americans. Stories like that one are featured throughout the year on the international QQ website. My stories are read by about 2 million readers each month – that is how I am able to influence so many people internationally.

Meiling Jin is a Tiara Model during our runway show events for Tiara Magazine and Live Out Loud Charity.

What modeling experience do you have in general? Most of my modeling is done for my own fashion layouts on the QQ or other similar websites. My fashion photos are spread around the world constantly. They have even been featured on TV in China on occasion. The runway work is interesting but I am also looking forward to more trade show modeling. One assignment that I have coming up is as a model to feature the sales of a product, but also as a Chinese-English translator for business meetings with that Chinese company’s executives. This proves that models are more than pretty faces – we can be involved in big business as well.

Do you have any pageantry or acting experience? My acting experience is primarily with my college classes. I don’t consider myself an actor. So far I have remained out of the pageant area of beauty due to my time constraints with college, journalistic assignments, and other modeling.

Who are your favorite designers? Betsey Johnson and Ralph Lauren.

Favorite makeup brands? Maybelline, L’Oreal and Cover Girl.

Favorite shoes you like to wear out and about? I enjoy heals, the taller the better. For some of these that are in the 8 inch height range, I must tape my feet with padding just to keep them comfortable, but they offer me the look that I want. But around campus I wear gym shoes just like everyone else although I prefer more colorful styles.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? My 2 ½ year readership for my international stories is approaching 50 million readers. How did this happen? I never let anyone insult me into not reaching my goals and my dreams. I am a model because I have studied and self-critiqued my work for almost four years. I have learned what to do to be successful. I have always worked to improve my style and image. Work work work and always look forward. I chased my dream and I caught it – but there is always a new dream to chase! But one important thing to remember is that you must find those people that reach out their hand to help you, and there are plenty of those people in my life that have helped me to achieve my success and I am thankful for every one of them!

The American Spirit Pageants has four divisions: Teen, Miss, Ms, and Mrs. We are proud to showcase the Mrs. American Spirit Dedra Curtis. Enjoy this exclusive interview.

Name: Dedra Curtis
Title: Mrs. American Spirit 2011 (Mrs. Florida Spirit 2011)

What does it mean to hold the title you have with the American Spirit Pageants? In my professional and personal life I always strive to be number one and to do my best; so it means a lot to me to say that I am the first Mrs. Florida Spirit and first Mrs. American Spirit. I have the honor of setting the stage for what this pageant represents and for our future queens. Not many people can say that they are the first. I really love that.

Why did you choose the American Spirit Pageant over any other pageant system? I have competed in several different systems over the years and have felt that there has been a deterioration of the foundation of what pageantry is all about: True Volunteerism and Charity from the heart. Not just picking a platform and trying to impress the Judges. I appreciate that the fundraising for charity is a judged element of American Spirit and believe that it levels the playing field.

Tell us about the phases of competition? How were they like other pageants you may have competed in and how were they different? The phases of the competition were really about the same in my experience. I did like that my division had the option to wear swimwear or fitness wear. Also, my favorite portion of competition is interview (panel) and we had 8 amazing judges. I have never had so many Judges in competition, and honestly felt by having 8 Judges, no one Judge could throw the scoring; thereby making things very fair.

What insight can you give about this competition so other girls and women can feel prepared? To please just be yourself; and show your beauty inside and out! This competition is about the all around beauty.

What has been your most memorable experience with your title? I actually have a few…but my MOST memorable one was attending a “Make A Wish” fundraising event, and meeting the kids.

How do you feel to be passing on your title… April is almost here. Sad and excited. Sad, that I can’t believe how quickly time has passed by; and excited for my next successor. She is going to have an amazing year!

What is your personal platform? My personal platform is multi-facetted: I call it “doing good in the neighborhood”. There are SO many deserving charities out there that need assistance. I serve on committees and boards for several charities. My favorite charities that I support are: American Diabetes Association, Light House Central Florida (for visual impairment and blindness), Special Olympics, and the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals (Shriners). I like to go where I am needed and people certainly pay attention when you are wearing a crown and sash!

Since fundraising is part of the American Spirit Pageant system, what are some ways you can encourage competitors to fundraise? Do you have any unique ideas? My first piece of advice is to not stress out over the fundraising. If you are passionate about the cause, the money will come. As far as ways to fundraise, if a delegate has a child, putting together a neighborhood “Daddy/Daughter” or “Mommy/Son” dance or event is a fun way to interject family memories with fundraising. Another way, could be to team up with a restaurant, retail store or boutique, and ask if they would be willing to donate a portion of the proceeds from the day’s sales to the charity. Simple donation boxes at the counter also work too.

Tell us about your modeling experience? I am currently represented by Premier Model Management based out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. For years I have done commercial, print, and fitness modeling. I have modeled for Dillards, Suzi Foxx, Two Coconuts Swimwear, Modern Grace Boutique, and Bebe’s Boutique. Even though I am height challenged (5’3”), I have also been known to rock the runway… Most recently for Model 4 Miracles Fashion Show.

What is your pageantry experience? Pageantry is my alter-ego! I have judged, competed and held various titles: Miss Sunburst 1992; 2005 Mrs. Florida-US Continental people’s choice; 2009 Mrs. College Park-America (Placed top 10 at Mrs. Florida-America); 2009 Mrs. College Park-International; 2010 Mrs. Orlando-America and won 2010 Mrs. Florida-America, people’s choice (including 2010 Mrs. Congeniality & 2010 Most Involved in the Community); 2011 Mrs. Florida, American Spirit and won nationals: Mrs. American Spirit 2011; 2011 Orlando’s Perfect Woman and placed top 10 for America’s Perfect Woman (Fashion/Modeling Competition).

Favorite pageant dress designer? For sure, Sherri Hill. Her gowns are so beautiful and fit me so well. She is my most favorite.

Describe your pageant style? Preppy-Glamorous…if that makes any sense. I like to be comfortable, but will always wear a dress before pants, even in rehearsals. Well tailored outfits and 5 inch heels (the higher the better). Always ON!

Favorite shoes to wear out and about? Strappy stilettos.

Describe your everyday style? Tailored classic dresses. Because I own a legal company suits and dresses are what I live in. When I’m not working, I love my Miss Me Jeans (with bling), and white button down. Simple, understated, with high strappy shoes.

Are pageant titleholders relevant in today’s society? How do you handle the negative comments that are made about pageantry and modeling in general? Do you let these people rain on your parade? I believe pageantry is all in what you make of it. If you represent the system to the best of your ability, and are involved in the community, people will see the good. I do equate pageantry at times to first impressions: when you first meet someone and if they have a negative attitude, then your perception of them usually is a negative one. Attitude is everything. I don’t let anyone rain on my parade. Pageantry is like any subjective sport…we put ourselves out there and that takes an incredible amount of confidence. I personally like changing people’s minds about pageantry…leading by example.

Do you get nervous before you compete? If so what has worked for you to help you cope and what advice can you offer other competitors so they can do their best? Of course I do! That is what keeps me on my toes. I compete better under pressure. Not everyone is the same though. Every time you compete, you learn something new about yourself. These are things that I know I take with me on a day-to-day basis. As far as coping during competition, it helps to be kind, but try to focus on you and not what everyone else is wearing or doing. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter…it is up to you to do your personal best.

Are there any accomplishments you would like to share with our readers? 2011 was a BIG year for me! I am honored and humbled to be recognized by Orlando Woman Newspaper as one of the 10 Woman to Watch in 2011. I was selected as one of five local “celebrities”, by Femmes de Coeur, for their “Dancing with the Stars” charity event that raised several thousands of dollars for the University of Central Florida and Valencia Foundation, nursing scholarship programs. Through my former modeling and acting school, Lisa Maile, I was honored in their media and marketing, as a highlighted alumni.

Is there anything else you would like to include? I am the resident “Ask the Expert” contributor for BRITE Magazine (Beautiful, Resourceful, Intelligent, Thoughtful and Emotionally-connected), a national women’s business magazine that supports the growth and support of women in life and in business. In addition, I am currently building a multi-million dollar legal franchise – LegalOne, which I founded in 2005.

Nathalie Muñoz Santos
Miss Dominican Republic US® 2011
Age: 18
I decided to compete in Miss Dominican Republic US® because it is an official franchise (only one in the U.S.) of the a Miss Dominican Republic Universe pageant, preliminary to the Miss Universe Pageant. It has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to represent my country at the Miss Universe Pageant and Miss DR US® gives you that unique opportunity so I decided to give it a try and now I am living my dream! -My favorite part of pageant competition is the actual competition, knowing that you have to give, do and look your best at all times not just to show others but to prove yourself that you CAN do it and do it well. I always tell myself, I am my biggest competition and the only thing between myself and the crown is me. -I think it is every girls dream to be a beauty queen at least for a day, I always had it in me but I was very self-conscious because when I was 9 I was diagnosed with Scoliosis (a medical condition which the person’s spine is curved side to side) and I thought I would not be able to model or do pageants, my mother always inspired me to go after my goals, her love and support motivated me to do Miss DR US®.

Miss DR US® 2011 was my first pageant, I came in with zero experience and not really knowing much about the system, luckily, God put my way special people who I call my angels who helped and guided me through the process. Before the pageant I did not have any modeling experience, after I took over the title I had the opportunity to work with some amazing photographers for different magazines, recently I did a commercial for a new phone card campaign and in February I will model in Dominican Republic Fashion Week, definitely, the pageant is opening doors for me, opportunities that I plan to pursue after the pageant. I see myself doing fashion week and major worldwide campaigns. — Learn more at www.missrdus.com

I am just so grateful and so happy to be chosen for this and to be a part of this magazine.

Are you a runway model or print model? Which do you prefer? I am mostly a Print and Commercial Model. I have done runway also. I mean I love them both the same, both are very fun and very different at the same time, but if I would have to choose I would have to say that runway modeling is where my heart is.

What do you like about modeling? Everything there is to know about modeling and being a model in general I love. I love everything that modeling has to offer, from the clothes you put on, the make-up and so on. But I would have to say that what I love mostly about modeling is the way it makes you feel, the confidence that it gives you, the beauty that you have from within that comes out in pictures, or in the clothes from the designer that you put on. And that confidence and beauty that each model finds in themselves is priceless.

What do you say to all the haters out there? Do you let them rain on your parade? I tell them to go get a life ! I do not let them rain on my parade at all. There are always people who would want to take you off your path. Don’t let them do that to you. Keep on following your heart and that path that you are on will take you far. Will take you to a happier YOU .

How can you help others become a model like you? What advice would you give? The way to become a Model has to start with a dream and being super ambitious. From there you have to be committed to working really hard, going from agency to agency, knocking on doors over and over again, and just do everything in your power that needs to be done to get to where you want to be. ” NO” will not be an answer. Keep on going until you get that ” YES “.Also, start by believing in yourself that you can do it, and that you are worthy of being a Model. Remember, beauty always comes from within, so if you have that than other people will see it. My advice will be to never give up on your dreams. Always keep on going, never listen to people’s negativity. That will only take you off your path that you were meant to be on. Write your own destiny for yourself.

What has this industry taught you? This industry has thought me that things are never what they really are. I mean, you imagine it one way but then it comes out and surprises you. And I mean that in a good way. It has also taught me that if you are willing to work hard, be responsible and on time, your dream will come true. It has taught me that my beauty is unique, and that I have the power to turn my flaws and insecurities into greatness. Use your beauty the way God created it, because we are all beautiful in our own way. It had taught me to believe in myself that anything is possible. It has taught me Confidence !

What modeling experience do you have with Tiara Magazine? I have done one amazing runway show for how to prevent Suicide in teens and adults. Depression and anxiety that teens and adults have these days because of the pressures of life. It was truly amazing to be asked to walk for such a great cause. I will do it again and again in a heartbeat. ( FACT: Simona was chosen as our showstopper out of nearly 125 models. She ended the Love the Skin You’re In fashion show with a bang!)

Simona was one of our beautiful models in Tiara Magazine's annual charity fashion show for Live Out Loud Charity. Photo by JSK photography.

What modeling experience do you have in general? I have great experiences! Every single audition that I go into is just beyond amazing. I have recently just done a shoot for a store called ” ULTA” that many of you know and I myself shop there too, and the people that I have met on the set were just so amazing. From the make-up to the hair, from our lunches to the chats, it was all in a great day of work.

Do you have any pageantry or acting experience? I do not have any pageantry experience at all, but I do have some acting experience. I have auditioned for a few movie roles and also I have taken classes at the ” Piven Theater “, which is located here in Evanston, They have the most amazing acting classes, and I recommend any of you who are truly interested and serious about acting going there and taking some classes, because it will truly help you getting that audition in the future. Also I have done some commercials.

Who are your favorite designers? You know what ? It is so hard to choose, because I love all of them ! Of course I would lie if I didn’t say that I love Versaci, Marc Jacobs, Nicole Miller, Perry Ellis. But my favorite of all times will have to be Ralph Lauren. I just love his clothes. They are just so unique, so simple and it just gives you that clean, timeless look that I like.

Favorite makeup brands? To be really honest with you, I do not like to use a lot of make-up unless I am on the set. But I usually like everything that has an organic touch to it. I have discovered that not all the expensive brands are always the best. Some are, and some are not. My favorite will have to be the AIRFLAS by Dior.Which is a spray foundation that you just spray on, and it gives you a clean but natural look, which is great for an every day look and the best for print and on camera shoots. It is a little more expensive but it is worth every peny, and I can’t live without it ! Also anything from “MAC” is great, because it is really affordable and just has great quality about it. The bronze Goddes from Estee Lauder is also great. If you are going out for the night and you would like a little more color to your pale skin, apply that. For your lips I like the best a pink Lip Gloss, brand name Lorac, and you can find it at any ULTA store, and i’s not expensive at all, it will last you a long time. The rouge artist intense nr 36, is also a really great hot pink that you can use if you are going out. You can also purchase that at any ULTA stores near you. It is really affordable and it will give you that great, confident look that you will need for a fun night with your girlfriends or husband.

Favorite shoes you like to wear out and about? For the winter and cold I love my UGGS. What girl doesn’t ? I love my BCBC for going out. But my favorite for the summer and for the every day will have to be the Roman Sandles, or the Gladiator Sandles as they call it. They are super comfy, and super stylish.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Yes, I would love to share that I am originally from Romania but came here at a young age with a dream. All I had was my dream, and that dream kept me alive that one day I will be a Model. Against all the odds of life and language, I have overcome all of them. I was determined to make my dream come true, to live the life that I had always imagined. With hard work, love in your heart, persistence, ambition and the believe that it can be achieved, I have made my Dream a reality. Stay always humble, help others when you can, have Love in your heart for yourself and for others. Be who you are and don’t let anybody change you. As I said, be careful what you wish for because dreams do come true. I know that mine did. God Bless you.

Name: Rachel Ann Gollhardt
Title: Miss Teen American Spirit 2011

What does it mean to hold the title you have with the American Spirit Pageants? The American Spirit to me means volunteerism. The pageant encompasses not only the normal “outer” beauty component, but it also brings out the best in girls like me and helps show all of our hard work outside the pageant! ASP brings out the true beauty in girls, and helps them understand that their outer beauty is not the only thing that is important to make them a good person! The pageant is great! It is a well run organization that can do nothing but continue to grow and make a difference in lives of girls like me who have the mission of community service in their hearts. I am so excited to have been an ambassador for the pageant and for the HAVlife Foundation and will continue working with this wonderful charity. I am determined, as are they, to help spread the message that there is to be no more lost potential; everyone deserves a chance no matter who they are, their economic status, or where they live.

To learn about Havlife Foundation go to http://www.havlifefoundation.org/index.html

Why did you choose the American Spirit Pageant over any other pageant system? We are all called to share ourselves in the name of service. ASP is a perfect combination of a pursuit I love: Pageantry and a satisfaction of one of my core beliefs: Charity.

Tell us about the phases of competition? How were the like other pageants you may have competed in and how were they different?
ASP really allows who you are to shine and encouraged us through positive interaction and reinforcement to be confident in our own skin. Interview is a very warm and comforting environment. I always enjoy the interview process, but I know many girls do not. The ASP judges were much more like friends than interviewers that I have had in other systems. Swimsuit was my most dreaded, but they truly look at how you present yourself in the suit – the smiles on panel made me feel so much more comfortable (and this was my first swim suit phase competition). Evening Gown truly is judged on you in your gown and not on your gown. After all the great judge response, you cannot help but be excited to walk out on stage and shine in your beautiful dress. The atmosphere of ASP is a warm and friendly environment! The pageant staff is accessible and helpful, the judges (while celebrities & fashion experts) are friendly, kind and encouraging.

What insight can you give about this competition so other girls and women can feel prepared? For evening gown: Pick the gown you love and then get out there and sell it to others! If you are unsure, uncomfortable, or unhappy whatsoever in a gown – pick a different one. Even if you try really hard to shine, that doubt or discouragement will show somehow. For swimsuit: You don’t have to be sexy to be beautiful. Pick a suit that makes you comfortable and confident. A confident person is needed as an ambassador. They are truly watching for your comfort and ability to shine! For pageant prep: Be your best self! Prepare by practice, good health habits, and exercise. When you do all these things you are comfortable in the fact that you have done everything you can to be your best. Also, if you have any doubts…call an expert! It is amazing what they see in your resume, your interview practice, your posture, your wardrobe that you or your family may not.

What is been your most memorable experience with your title? Dancing with children and their families that have had or will soon experience horrible tragedies or medical experiences at the Make a Wish Gala. I have found that when you make others happy, you are then very happy yourself. I could not have been more blessed to have had the opportunity to be in the company of these courageous people.

How do you feel to be passing on your title… April is almost here. I am excited to allow someone else to experience the joy. I am obviously sad that it means I am no longer the reigning queen, but I know that I have created relationships and great memories that I can cherish always. I have grow from this experience and am very proud of the good deeds I accomplished because of the honor and title.

What is your personal platform? I have been a passionate advocate for the less fortunate for many years. I created a foundation called B2S Success. It is a Back to School Awareness and Fund-raising Campaign. To date I have been able to raise in excess of $25,000 in supplies and donations for children going back to school in the fall. You can read about the program, view photos, and watch my advertisement at:http://www.dosomething.org/project/b2s-success-it-takes-community. I would be happy to help anyone start their own B2S Success program. I am also an advocate for Environmental Awareness. I created the Be a Carbon Cop program to teach children in grades K-2 how to be more aware of their environmental impact and then encourage them to spread the information to others. I was invited to Washington DC last Earth Day and helped launch their Energy Star Campaign. The EPA chose me to highlight in one of their video segments and filmed my workshops and my efforts. I continue to run workshops and maintain a website; www.beacarboncop.com.

Since fundraising is part of the American Spirit Pageant system, what are some ways you can encourage competitors to fundraise? Do you have any unique ideas? Use the gifts that you have. Use the relationships within your network. Do not be afraid to ask! I am a singer. Therefore, I used talent to entertain others and asked during these shows for them to make a good-will donation to the cause. I am also a known activists and have had great respect and support from my community. When I needed to accomplish a goal to compete, I had three weeks to do so. I went to the ones who consistently love and support me! They came through. During my performances, I incorporated donated dinners, bake sales, gift basket raffles and ask everyone I knew to help with any of these. I was able to raise the most funds of anyone in any phase of the competition! I exceeded $5500 in donations in less than 3 weeks because I did all three…sing, network and ask kindly.

Tell us about your modeling experience? Since I was 12, I have had the opportunity to take many classes led by successful models, actors, and entertainment professionals. I also took a thirteen week course with Barbizon acting and modeling school. I have been singing since I was 2 1/2 and the courses I took combined with my vocal coaching allowed me to have more confidence and movement on stage during my performances. They also helped me be more confident in pageantry during runway, swimsuit, and talent. I have also enjoyed the experiences I had during the filming of various industry opportunities as a sportswear model, bridal model, and commercial actress.

What is your pageantry experience? I started in pageant through the NAM program when I was 13. I had asked to be a part of pageants for many years, but my parents allowed this one because it had a talent component. I won top in the state of PA for talent for my performance. I was then allowed to choose one pageant per year to compete and have competed in the International System, been a titlist in the Miss PA Outstanding Teen System and held fair titles, as well. The ASP National Competition was my first National Competition and I am honored to have represented ASP for the past year.

Rachel is posing with her former pageant title. Photo courtesy of .The Corry Journal

Favorite pageant dress designer? Crown Designs. They are the designer of my favorite evening gown, the gown I used in the 2011 National Pageant. I choose this gown as a reflection of my personal style. It made me feel like I was Queen Elizabeth – beautiful, powerful, and elegant.

Describe your pageant style? My style is Being Myself. I do my own personal best, choose dresses and outfits that reflect my own personal tastes, and always stay true to myself.

Favorite shoes to wear out and about? High heels or my Ugg boots. I love my Uggs because they are as comfortable as they proclaim to be and I love heels because they make me feel taller and professional!

Describe your everyday style? I love professional clothing and high heels! Of course, I am also really comfortable in sweats, but if I only had one outfit to choose – it would be a great dress and snazzy heels.

Are pageant titleholders relevant in today’s society? How do you handle the negative comments that are made about pageantry and modeling in general? Do you let these people rain on your parade? People do rain on my parade, and sometimes they do dampen my spirits. But, then I realize that they either are ignorant or jealous. Jealous of the joy I have from working within my passions and wondering why they aren’t as joyful in their own life…or ignorant to all the long term benefits that pageantry can give to you. I love being a part of the greater good and sharing myself with others. Pageantry and modeling both let you do just that.

ASP particularly, has shown that being successful in pageantry is relevant through their 5 C mission: Courage, Conviction, Compassion, Character, Charity. Through my previous pageant experiences and also through my reign with ASP, I have enjoyed many experiences that will resonant in my future success. Because of pageantry I have learned many skills that will continue to help me attain success in future endeavors.

For instance;

I have learned to perform under pressure with grace and style.

I have learned to smile, even if I don’t feel like it.

I have learned that not everyone will judge me in the best light and that is okay.

I have learned that not everyone will like me, but to be successful I must be true to myself.

I have learned that I love to be in front of a crowd – when I have prepared diligently and been encouraged with love and respect.

AND…I have learned that a pageant title may open a door for you, but it is your demeanor and ability to build personal relationships that keep it open.

Do you get nervous before you compete? If so what has worked for you to help you cope and what advice can you offer other competitors so they can do their best? My mom gets way more nervous for me. I believe that my nerves are from the realization that even if I do my best, it may not be done in the style or presentation that the competition is looking for. It is really hard to not be caught up in trying to be someone you think they want and just be your best self. My parents have always supported me and encouraged me to only worry about doing my best, not someone else’s best. If I do my best, I know at the end, they are really proud of me no matter what the results may have been…that type of support has really helped me to be comfortable and confident in myself.

Are there any accomplishments you would like to share with our readers? I am thrilled to be completing my freshman year at Ashland University as a dual major in Political Science and Vocal Performance. I am a member of the Ashbrook Scholar program, an Ashland University Ambassador, an Alpha Delta Pi sorority sister, a Lacrosse team member, and a Green Team member. Recently, I was chosen to compete vocally in a national competition and am honored as traditionally freshman are not taken to compete. I am still a committed advocate against under-age drinking and for drug use prevention. I was honored to be recognized by the PA State House of Representatives and asked to open session with a performance of the National Anthem. I hope to work with the PA State Government in the future, I would love to change lives as the governor of Pennsylvania.

Is there anything else you would like to include? I want to thank everyone who has supported me in so many ways. From magazines like Tiara Trade who have helped further the success of ASP and also, allowed me a precious moment to share what I believe in to the little girl who wouldn’t let go of my hand and had me laughing and dancing all night long. It is truly an honor that one drop of ink is used for me, that one little girl smiled because of me, that lives are going to be better because I could ask and receive for charity. If you remember nothing else about me, remember these two thoughts: Make EVERY DAY your BEST DAY and ALWAYS be your BEST self!

Why did you choose the Petite United America Pageant? After competing in the Miss Texas USA pageant I realized it was very difficult for shorter girls to be competitive in the pageant world. I thought Miss Petite United America would give me a more even playing field and show that petite girls are just as beautiful!

What does it mean to you representing the title of Miss Petite United America? Since this is the first title I have ever held, it is such an honor to go to events and represent the pageant. It also shows that no matter how tall, short, or whatever image issues you may face, you are beautiful.

How are you a role model for young women your age? Attending a large university like Texas A&M there are literally thousands of girls my age that I can be an influence on. I live my life by setting an example to young girls that if they respect themselves, other people are going to respect them.

What advice can you offer others that want to compete? Being yourself is always the strongest card you can play. You are one of a kind and show everyone just how special you are.

What are your hobbies? I love to run! I train for marathons even though I have to wake up at 5:30 every day. I also love spending time with the students I tutor. Building a relationship inside the classroom makes all the difference in children’s ability to learn and be successful.

Are you in school? How do you manage your time with school, a national title, and your hobbies (not to mention family and friends!)? I am a sophomore at Texas A&M University and I wouldn’t trade the crazy life of finding a balance for anything. I have learned in college you can do it all if you just allow yourself a break every once in a while.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I will be a full time teacher and hopefully working for my master’s degree. There are so many things I want to accomplish but I have learned to focus on right now otherwise time will pass you by.

Have you ever lost a pageant and if so what advice can you give others in the same position? I competed in the Miss Texas USA pageant last September. It was the first pageant I had ever done but it was a great experience. I would recommend getting into a large pageant for anyone. It teaches you how to compete and be confident with what you have.

Do you have a platform? My platform is to make sure students that don’t come from the best home situations get the attention they need to succeed in school. I believe that all schools should offer after school programs to help students with homework and give them a chance in the classroom. So many children go home to families that cannot help them with homework or projects and they need a chance to ask questions and be successful in school.

Do you have a talent? I love acting, especially doing musicals. Give me a show on Broadway any day!

Do you have any previous pageantry experience? Just Miss Texas USA 2012!

What was your overall experience like at the Miss Petite United Pageant? Going from a huge production like Miss Texas USA and to Miss Petite was so strange. I loved the closeness of the previous title holders. I would recommend this pageant to anyone, because you will definitely have a benefit from it.

Do you have any modeling experience? I have done clothing modeling for local stores in East Texas but nothing recently.

To learn about the Miss Petite United America Pageant.

How do you feel being showcased as Tiara Magazine’s Model of the Week? I’m super excited to be featured as Tiara Magazine’s Model of the Week. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tiara Magazine for the past two years. I’ve learned a lot from Tiara Magazine’s Editor in Chief, Sherrie Gearheart and I’m looking forward to a great 2012!

Are you a runway model or print model? Which do you prefer? So far, I have participated in runway shows and I’ve enjoyed it. One of my goals is to become a print model.

What do you like about modeling? I’ve always liked the fact that modeling can be art. I enjoy being able to use modeling as a form of expression and letting my creativity take over. I also enjoy being able to showcase and sell any piece that is being modeled. Modeling is a business and models are expected to sell the designer’s work whether it’s through a runway show or print.

What do you say to all the haters out there? Do you let them rain on your parade? I don’t know that I have any haters out there. If I do, I definitely wouldn’t let anyone rain on my parade. I’m 100% focused on my goals and any haters out there should find something else to do…lol

How can you help others become a model like you? What advice would you give? I have a long way to go before I reach my goal and that involves a lot of hard work and dedication. Knowing the industry and where you fit is an important factor in finding success in the fashion industry. Study your craft and work hard at it to perfect it everyday!

What has this industry taught you? The industry so far has taught me to have thick skin and to research! This industry can be tough and rejection is something that happens often before hearing a yes. Researching is an important key in the industry; one has to know what type of modeling we fit in and research everything about it.

What modeling experience do you have with Tiara Magazine? I’ve had the pleasure of walking in Tiara Magazine’s annual fashion show that benefits the Live Out Loud Charity. Recently, I participated in a photo shoot as a Tiara Model for Mira Shan jewelry and Ghazala’s Boutique.

What modeling experience do you have in general? For the past 2 years I have participated as a model in various runway shows for local designers including shows that donated all profits to charitable causes. I have participated in photo shoots which have helped me work improve and work towards my goal of becoming a print model.

Mayra Chavez was awarded Tiara Magazine's Calendar Cover Girl. She will be featured in Tiara Magazine's International Calendar in the pages of Tiara Magazine.

Do you have any pageantry or acting experience? None

Who are your favorite designers? Christian Louboutin, Kimora Lee Simmons, Dolce and Gabbana, and Marc Jacobs to name a few!

Favorite makeup brands? Mac and Victoria’s Secret

Favorite shoes you like to wear out and about? I love my boots! I can wear them with almost anything and they’re comfortable. During summer time, I enjoy flip flops

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? If you have a dream, pursue it! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication but it can be done. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Thank you so much for reading my interview and thank you Tiara Magazine and Sherrie Gearheart for all of the opportunities!
