Words from Ashley Browning…..
“My name is Ashley Browning and I just turned 18 on December 9th. I started my own organization called Teens Against Domestic Abuse I started this in October of this year because I found out that between 600,000 to 6 million cases of abuse occur a year. Several of my friends have been victim to this while dating someone. I realized that abuse comes in several forms (physical, emotional and sexual)and I wanted to know how I could help these people. I want to educate and inform the community about abuse and how to get out of an abusive relationship. I wanted to educate the community on how they can help. So many times people look the other way even though they know someone who is getting abused. I want to change that. I want to help the victims and survivors find help before its too late.”
What Ashley is doing about it…….
“I decided to join up with The Harbor House of Central Florida and work to help the people who need their services. The Harbor House is a non profit organization that has a 24 hour crisis hotline, is an emergency shelter, and is also a great resource. The first thing I did was I had purple silicone bracelets made that have my organizations name on it and started giving them out. And I also started a Face Book page for my organization which I update regularly with information of ways to help and what I am doing to assist. My first online photo contest was in October 2011. October is Domestic Abuse Awareness month. I thought this would be a great time to bring awareness to the community about abuse. I found some wonderful people who donated prizes to the 2 winners and a crown and sash to the winner of the purple picture contest. This contest brought in $120 to the Harbor House; which helped 2 families stay at the Harbor House. The next thing I did and will continue to do is to collect used cell phones. The cell phones will go to the victims at the Harbor House to use so they can call for assistance if needed. In one months time I have collected 35 phones. I joined together with a pageant director (Superstarz pageants) and we made her pageant this past weekend a benefit pageant. The contestants were to bring in a holiday gift which would go to the Harbor House. Sixty Five gifts were collected!
Yesterday was the beginning of my second online photo contest. With all of the amazing prizes donated I am hoping I will bring in double the amount of money from my first contest. All of the proceeds will go to The Harbor House. I have put feelers out that I would like to be invited to speaking engagements at schools etc. This is such an important cause and an under discussed one. There is no excuse for abuse in any form. Abuse victims include women, children AND men. We need to be able to recognize the signs of abuse in ourselves and others. We need to know what to do for ourselves and how to help others. We cannot continue to ignore and to turn our heads. There is not enough said about abuse. I just gave up a state and national pageant title but hold the title now of Miss Miracle and Grand Supreme of Tampa for Miss American Darling pageants and Mini Supreme for Florida State Pageants.”
Thank you,
Ashley Browning
